William J. Ryan

Friends will be recieved at A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston Thursday, from 4 pm to 7 pm.


A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 am Friday at Saint Joseph's Church, Wall St. Kingston, NY. Burial will follow at the Hurley Cemetery.

William J. Ryan, age 83, died at Falmouth, MA after a long illness.


He was the husband of Marie E. Ambrose Ryan who survives. They were in the 60th year of their marriage.


He was born in Kingston, NY on March 9, 1927, the son of the late William D. Ryan and the late Alice Matthews Ryan Gannon.


He was a graduate of St. Joseph's grammar school and Kingston High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1946. He attended Siena College and St. John's University Law School. He was the founding member of the Kingston law firm, Ryan Roach & Ryan.


In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons and one daughter: William J. and Barbara D. Ryan Jr., Kevin M. and Patricia L. Ryan, both of the town of Ulster NY; Thomas R. Ryan and Tracey M. Weis of Lancaster, PA; MaryAnne R. and Brian M. Flynn of Charlestown, MA; Timothy J. Ryan and Adrienne W. Brodeur of New York City; and Michael A. and Jacqueline L. Ryan of the town of Ulster, NY.


Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; Captain Patrick K. Ryan U.S. Army, John R. Flynn, Courtney M. Ryan, Katherine J. Flynn, Timothy J. Ryan Jr., Michael F. Ryan, Nicholas E. Ryan, Margaret R. Ryan, Bridget A. Ryan, Thomas J. A. Ryan, Peter F. Ryan, Sally-Marie Ryan, Claire H. Ryan, Madeleine R. Brodeur, and William B. Ryan. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert J. Ryan of Esopus, NY.


At the time of his death, Mr. Ryan was a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Ulster County Bar Association. He was a former Trustee and member of Saint Joseph's Church in Kingston, NY. Since retirement in 1987, he was a communicant of Saint Anthony's Church, East Falmouth, MA. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #275 and the Fourth Degree Assembly. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Benedictine Hospital and of the Benedictine Health Foundation, Inc.; Director of the Ulster County Bar Association; member of the City of Kingston Historical Landmarks Commission; member of the Housing Code Commission; member of the Advisory Board of Mount St. Alphonsus Esopus, NY; and a Director of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ryan was also a volunteer at Falmouth Hospital, Falmouth, MA. The William Ryan family would like to thank the caring and extraordinary nurses, doctors, and staff members of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Falmouth
Hospital, and Hematology Oncology Specialists of Cape Cod.
