William J. Michaels Sr.

William J. Michaels Sr., of Hemlock Avenue, Kingston died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at Benedictine Hospital. He was 56. He was born in Newburgh on October 21, 1948, a son of Evelyn Holden Tappen and the late Edward D. Michaels. A professional painter, working for Soper Cabinets and Mohonk Mountain House. Mr. Michaels was a member of Painters Local 155 of District Council #9. He also worked for many years at the Kingston Brickyard. In 1990, he moved to Albany where he earned his data processing and engraving certifications. For many years he has worked for the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany. Mr. Michaels served as site manager at the DePaul Residence, a 50-unit, singleroom-occupancy building (and one of the largest programs of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless and low-income individuals in Albany.) In June of 2004 he was unanimously chosen (among 14 counties and 1500 employees) as the recipient of the first annual Kathleen Picotte Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions and service to the poor. Bishop Howard Hubbard presented the award to Mr. Michaels at the Catholic Charities Annual Dinner. One brother Edward “Ned” Michaels died in 2000. Surviving in addition to his mother of Kingston are one son William J. Michaels Jr. of Somerton, AZ, one daughter Jennifer Michaels of Kingston; his best friend and former wife Celia Michaels, three brothers Larry Michaels of Peabody, Mass., Jerry P. Michaels of Brick, NJ and Michael Tappen of Kingston; two sisters Dorian Michaels and Michele Prendergast, both of Kingston; two grandchildren Rhasson London and Sophia Georges. Many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Friday 3-5 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 AM from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Colman’s Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
