William Harris, Sr. of Main St., Saugerties died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital. He was 85.
He was born in Brooklyn on September 23, 1922. Mr. Harris servedin the US Navy during WW II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Harris was a member of the American Legion Post 150.
He moved to Saugerties in 1972, and for many years was employed by Grand Union as a butcher in many Hudson Valley stores. He retired from Al's Supermarket in Boiceville.
An avid fisherman and Mets fan he bowled in the Soulful Rollers Bowling League at Mid-City Lanes.
His wife, Ruth Parker Harris, died April 17, 1988; one daughter Ruth Faith Harris died in 1963. His son, Sheldon "Bob" Harris, Sr. died March 30, 2008; one grandson Richard Harris, Jr. died previously.
Surviving are three sons William Harris Jr. and his wife Nellie of Accord; Richard Harris and his wife Mirta of Ocala, FL, and Sean Harris and his wife Vicky of Stone Ridge; one daughter Sandy Hawver and her husband Phillip of Boiceville; his companion of 13 years Mildred Yannace of Saugerties; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be conducted at Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Sunday, May 4th from 12:00 - 2:00 PM. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 PM.
Inurnment, in Long Island National Cemetery, will be conducted at a later date.
