William "Bill" Andrew Olsen, 92, of Ulster Park, NY, passed Friday, May 19th, 2017 at the Health Alliance Hospital, Broadway Campus, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 19th, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Ole and Martha (Andersen) Olsen.
He was the husband of Joan Cumming Olsen. They wed on October 17th, 1970. Bill served in the US Army, 4025th Signal Service Group, in the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns of WWII as a Technician Fifth Grade. Bill was a graduate of Columbia University, class of 1950, with a BS in Chemical Engineering.
He worked his entire career for American Cyanamid Company, a leading manufacturer of chemical, pharmaceutical, and medical products, largely managing outside contractors in the construction of Cyanamid's chemical plants.
Bill was a devoted and active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, he had served as Property Chairman for many years - responsible for many major improvements, including Gaise Hall, a new elevator, parking lots and much more. He was a member of the Town of Esopus American Legion, # 1298.
He was an accomplished powerboat operator and taught a course on celestial navigation for Staten Island's power squadron. Bill loved boating and fishing and spending time with family at Peck's Lake in upstate New York. He also enjoyed attending the Wednesday morning Men's breakfast at Redeemer.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Andrew J. Olsen, and his wife Jennifer Dolin Olsen of Cleveland, OH, Matthew W. Olsen and his wife Susan Chan-Olsen of Brooklyn, NY, grandchildren Braedon, Riley, Taylor, Kate and Henry Olsen. He was predeceased by his brother Rolf Arthur Olsen.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Redeemer Lutheran Church's Memorial Fund or Bell Choir, 104 Wurts St., Kingston, NY.
The memorial service will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 104 Wurts St. Kingston, on Saturday, June 3rd, at 10:30am. Reception and gathering to follow in Gaise Hall.
