Wanda M. Sumislaski, 90, of Kingston, formerly of Palm Coast, FL, died July 21, 2014 at HealthAlliance Hospital Broadway Campus.
Born in the Bronx, she was daughter of the late Konstanty & Josephine Hajduk Rajewski. After living in New York City and Linden New Jersey, Wanda's family moved to a farm in Roscoe NY. After high school graduation, she moved to Manchester Ct. and worked at Pratt Whitney Aircraft during World War II. That is where she met John Sumislaski, who was a sergeant in the army, during the European campaign. He was gone for two years but they wrote to each other all the time. After being married at St. John's Church in Manchester, John and Wanda decided to move back to Roscoe and took over Wanda's father's farm. They worked part time at the Antrim Lodge, getting knowledge of the restaurant business. In 1964 they moved and purchased the Lincoln Park Inn, and turned it into a successful and well known family restaurant on Ulster Avenue for 20 years. She was the head chef, while John operated the front end of the restaurant. Wanda was a very kind, sweet lady who always greeted friends, family and restaurant patrons with her beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. There was always room for you at her dinner table.
John and Wanda eventually sold the business in 1984, moving to Palm Coast, Fl. and were married for 39 years. Wanda was an active parishioner at Mother Seton Church, where she also became a Eucharistic Minister. She had a passion for golf, like her husband and sons, enjoyed entertaining her friends and playing in the bridge club. In 2004 she moved back to Kingston to be near family.
She is survived by her three children, Jane Greenberg of Kingston, John C. Sumislaski and his wife Priscilla of Ringwood, NJ, James M. Sumislaski and his wife Gina of Boca Raton, FL, a sister, Leonora Knickerbocker of Clinton, NY, sisters in law, Adella Carneilla and Mary Sumislaski of Manchester CT,. five grandchildren, Karyn Hernandez & her husband Rolando, David Greenberg & his wife Brooke, Danielle, Zachary & Matthew Sumislaski, four great- grandchildren, Alexander & Andrew Hernandez, David Morris and Kallie Greenberg. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, Wanda was predeceased by her husband, John C. Sumislaski, her brother, William Rajewski, and her son-in-law David C. Greenberg. Wanda will be reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
The funeral procession will form from the funeral home on Friday at 9:00 AM.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church.
Interment will follow in MT. Calvary Cemetery.
