Walter G. Pilz, 88, of Hurley, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at his residence. A lifelong Hurley resident, he was born March 18, 1924, in Hurley, the son of the late Walter M. and Anna C. Pilz
Walter was a devoted volunteer fireman, to his community, county and state. He was Life Member of Hulrey Fire Co. # 1 joining on January 7, 1946 where he was known as "Uncle Walt". He had 66 plus years of service, always there when needed. He served as treasurer for many years, and also as President, Vice President and Captain of the Fire Police.
Walt traveled many miles to NY State, Hudson Valley and County Firemen's meeting and conventions. His life was Fire Service. He received many awards, which he was so proud to receive.
He was a Life member of the Ulster County Volunteer Firemen's Association and Past Director, member and delegate to Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association, member of Firemen's Association of the State of NY, Hudson Valley Volunteer Fire Police Association and the Ulster County Fire Police Association, life member of Wiltwyck Hose Co., Kingston and the Hudson Valley Red Vest Club, member of Hurley Senior Citizens, Hurley Library and was a parishioner of St. Joseph's RC Church.
In his younger years he has been a member of Boy Scout Troop # 20 of Hurley, he was a graduate of the Hurley School and Kingston High School, class of 1942, where he had been a school Marshall, and was a graduate of Moran's School of business.
Walt had been employed by Behr Manning Corporation, Electrol and then by IBM of Kingston and Poughkeepsie for 25 years until his retirement. He was a member of the IBM quarter Century club.
Walt is survived by his wife Theresa Clark Pilz, sisters Anna Wamsley of Hurley and Marie DeWitt of Catskill, brother of Joseph Pilz of Saxton, daughter Tina Wilson of Virginia and god son Joseph Pilz, Jr. His brother in law Kenneth Wamsley died in a line of duty fire, many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. He was a great fireman, loved by all.
Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. Friends may call on Thursday from 2- 4 & 7- 9 pm. On Friday, the Hurley Fire Department, County, Hudson Valley and State Volunteer Firemen's Associations will pay their respect from 7 - 9 pm.
The funeral procession will form at 9:00 am Saturday at the Keyser's. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's RC Church. Burial in Hurley Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hurley Fire Department of Hurley Rescue Squad, 135 Old Route 209, Hurley, NY 12443 .
