Virginia "Jean" Burhans, 91, formerly of Shufeldt St. Kingston, passed peacefully Thursday, morning, November 6, 2014 at Golden Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Kingston. She was born April 5, 1923 in Kingston, the daughter of late Leo J. and Elizabeth Simmons Helmbold.
Jean was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1940, and the Kingston Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1944. She served as a Lieutenant in the US Army during World War II and was stationed at Roswell AFB, Albuquerque, NM, and Kennedy General Hospital, Memphis TN.
After returning from service, she began her nursing career working for the UC Health Department.
She then worked for the Kingston Hospital as an emergency room nurse. At its inception, she became the nurse manager of the Kingston Hospital Dialysis Unit, she retired in 1988.
Jean was a parishioner of Holy Cross Episcopal Church where she was very active. She taught Sunday School, was the assistant treasurer and served in many other capacities. She was a member of the Kingston Hospital Alumni Association and a member of the Red Hat Society. She had served as president, vice president, secretary and currently was treasurer of the resident council at the Golden Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. For several years she personally visited and welcomed new residents to Golden Hill.
She is survived by her children Beth Warhola and her husband Robert of Kingston, Robert L. Burhans and his wife Anne of Woodstock, granddaughters Elizabeth "Ellie" Burhans and her fiancé David Breault, Victoria"Tori" Burhans and her fiancé Matt Kelly, a niece Dorothy "Dolly" Merritt, nephews Lewis Helmbold, Jr, and John Helmbold, several grand nieces and grand nephews and dear friends Joe Longendyke, Helen Geider, Muriel Ausiano and Desiree Rossi. She was predeceased by her brother, Lewis J. Helmbold, Sr.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service 326 Albany Ave, Kingston. The family will receive their friends on Sunday from 3 - 6 pm. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Monday at 10:00 am. Private burial in Woodstock Cemetery.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 30 Pine Grove Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401
