Therese Karkowski formerly of St. Remy died Wednesday, March 03, 2004 at the Golden Hill Health Care Facility. She was 90. She was born in St. Hubert, Quebec, Canada on August 13, 1913, a daughter of the late Prudent and Virginie Belanger Dionne. Mrs. Karkowski was educated as a nurse in Canada and then moved to New York City in 1941. She worked at Columbia Presbyterian Babies Hospital as an O.R. Nurse. In 1952 she moved to St. Remy and for 16 years worked at Benedictine Hospital as a night supervisor. She retired in 1977. She then did private duty nursing for Ulster Home Health Care for several years.
A parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church, Eddyville and the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Wilbur, Mrs. Karkowski was an active member of A.A.R.P. for legislative issues.
Beloved wife of the late Peter A. Karkowski; loving mother of Paulette Grotzky, Anne Avellaneda, Janet Karkowski; Michael, Russell, Philip, Frank Karkowski and the late Diane Marie Rosado; sister of the late Mariel, Ernestine, Selena, Octave, Eugene, Charles, Joseph and Arson Dionne, grandmother of the late Lena M. Rosado; sister in law of Frank and Connie Karkowsky. 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews also survive. Reposing at the Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be on Saturday at 9:00 AM at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Cabrini-on-Hudson Chapel, Route 9W, West Park at 10:00 AM. A committal service will then be conducted at Wiltwyck Receiving Vault with interment in St. Remy Cemetery in the spring.
