Susan P. (Haskell) Walker, 87, peacefully went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on March 10, 2014. Susan was born Sept 27, 1926 in Cabot, VT.
She is predeceased by her mother and father Ruth Duke Walker and William Walker. Also her beloved brother and sisters, Agnes, Bill, Cathirene, and Betty. She leaves behind her much loved brother Roger Walker of Cabot VT., her children, Deborah A. Schledwitz and her husband Ken of Fort Collins, CO, Laurel L. Rhodes and her husband David of Lynchburg, VA, Priscilla J. Kenyon and her husband Rick of Galway, NY, and Rebecca R. Papierniak and her husband Ken of Olivebridge, NY, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
After graduating as Valedictorian of her high school class from Cabot High School, she attended the University of Vermont at Montpelier. She became a WWII bride. She graduated from evening school at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. Her four daughters were the great loves of her life. She was a pastor's wife for many years. She was involved by teaching Sunday school, directing Vacation Bible schools and also Child Evangelism in East Wallingford, VT and Galway, NY.
As her children grew she became involved in the Galway community. She was a charter member of the Galway Ambulance Corp. She became a Galway Central School bus driver; then graduated from Fulton-Montgomery Community College with an RN degree. She became a full time nurse at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. She always knew that being a nurse was her calling. She also worked part time as a school bus driver as a substitute on her days off from the hospital.
After she retired to her little cottage on Galway Lake, she continued to be of service to the community helping friends with physical problems, making beautiful quilts, sewing costumes for the Galway Players theater group, attending Bible Baptist Church in Galway, NY, and spending every minute available with her daughters and grandchildren. She moved to Ulster County in 2004.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, where friends may visit on Friday from 1-3 & 6-8pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11am at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in Tongore Cemetery, Olivebridge.
