Stewart Maurer, 82, of West Hurley, died Monday, August 1, 2016 at HealthAlliance Hospital Broadway Campus.
Born in Hempstead, NY, he was a son of the late Abraham & Mary Janvey Maurer. Stewart was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He received his Ph.D. from the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He was a beloved teacher of Electrical Engineering who taught for many years at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan. He was a professional consultant on electromagnetic fields and was deeply interested in their related health issues. Stewart was among the first members of the Woodstock Jewish Congregation, where he found great joy in spirituality and community. He was also a member of the Woodstock Havurah with Ira & Judith Eisenstein. Stewart was an avid world traveler and hiker. He summited all of the high points in 49 states as well as the high peaks of New Hampshire and the Catskills.
Stewart is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Maeve Maurer of West Hurley, whom he married on February 21, 1960, a son, Ezra Waltermaurer of Rosendale, a daughter, Rebecca Maurer of West Hurley, a step brother, Marvin Schwartz and his wife Susan of Roseland, NJ, two grandchildren, Daisy and Quinn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Stewart was predeceased by his brother, Marvin Maurer.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation on August 2 at 1:00 PM with Rabbi Jonathan Kligler, officiating.
Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery.
