Ruth Silverman of Woodland Pond Circle, New Paltz and formerly of Manhattan and Stone Ridge died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at home. She was 90.
She was born in New York City, the daughter of the late Max and Ida Gertner Kahn.
A graduate of Queens College, for many years, she was a secretary at Springfield Gardens High School in Queens.
Mrs. Silverman was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was an accomplished bookkeeper and school secretary. She was a fierce advocate for people and animals. A community activist, she was instrumental in blocking a landfill in Marbletown. She was one of the founders of the Marbletown Residents Assoc. and began the first local publication in Marbletown, the Marbletown Crier.
She also was involved in writing for her senior residence in Manhattan and advocated for the employees. While at Woodland Pond, she interviewed residents for that newsletter and served on various resident committees.
Her husband, Simon Silverman died October 19, 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Judith Greenfield and her husband Stuart of Stone Ridge; Marti Green and her husband Lenny of Kingston; four grandchildren, Emily Halstein and her husband Skip; Jonathan Greenfield and his wife Georgette; Jason Green and his wife Amanda; Andy Green and his wife Jackie. Also surviving are twelve great-grandchildren, Ricky and his fiance Danielle, Brittney, Abraham Joseph "A.J." Halstein; Ashley Litts, Channon, Alexzander, Adin and Hanna Greenfield; Rachel, Joshua, Jacob and Sienna Green. A cousin, Roslyn Rosenthal also survives.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, 10:00 AM at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Yael Romer will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Fairview, NJ. Shiva will be observed Monday thru Thursday from 2 - 4 & 6 - 9 PM at 100 Woodland Pond Circle, Apt. 406, New Paltz, NY.
