Ruth Gold of North Ballston Ave., Schenectady and formerly of Mountainview Avenue, Kingston died August 16, 2005 in Schenectady. She was 87.
Ruth was born in Manhattan on April 10, 1918, a daughter of the late David and Fannie Frohman Zucker. She moved to this area in 1934 and was a Kingston High School graduate, Class of '35. Ruth taught Sunday School at Temple Emanuel while in High School.
Ruth then graduated the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Class of '39. She married Harry Gold in September of 1940.
Her first volunteer effort in the general community was assisting a Board of Health doctor. The doctor would schedule 'Well Baby Clinics' that Ruth assisted.
During WW II Ruth participated in a volunteer nurse's aide program. In support of the war effort, B'nai B'rith formed a women's chapter of which Ruth was a charter member.
A former president of Temple Sisterhood, Ruth served as a board member of the Jewish Federation of Ulster County. The Ulster County Legislature appointed Ruth to the 'Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital's Board of Visitors' where she served as a representative to area inmates and their families.
Ruth was involved with the formation of the Mental Health Association and Planned Parenthood of Ulster County. She served on the YWCA board and the Kingston Library Board. She was awarded the 1998 Community Leader Award for Lifetime Service from the Jewish Federation of Ulster County.
Her husband, Harry, died March 5, 1998. Her son Barry Gold died October 5, 2002.
Surviving are two daughters Suzanne Gold and her husband John Berhaupt of Schenectady, and Margot Gold and her husband Stephen Erman of Saranac Lake; her daughter in law Sherry Gold of Slingerlands; one sister Doris Karp of Florida; her grandchildren Sam and Molly Erman, Amanda and Justin Berhaupt, Sari and Ben Gold; Several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Temple Emanuel, 243 Albany Ave, Rabbi Yael Romer will officiate. Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery.
