Ruth Jones, Beloved mother and grandmother, resident of Hurley, NY, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012, peacefully in her sleep. She was 90 years young.
Born Dec. 6, 1921, in Stuttgart, Germany, she immigrated to the US in 1930 with her parents, the former Eugene and Johanna Hahn, and younger sister, Hannelore ("Lore"). She became talented as an artist and milliner (both following in her mother's footsteps), dressmaker (having her own business), baker and chef (following her father), all while raising 3 sons and running a household. Her most favorite times were spent in the garden and in the kitchen - just creating.
Married May 28, 1942, to John Edward Jones, of Pennsauken, NJ, she did much traveling as a young wife while John pursued his career in industrial power and chemical plant construction. From Astoria / Queens, to Philadelphia, to Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Florida, New Jersey, and various stops in between, the family was always on-the-go. Three sons - John ("Jack"), Laurence ("Larry"), and Donald - arrived during these busy times.
After some years spent in South Jersey, the family finally settled in Hurley in 1964 - and thankfully no more moving. In the 1970's and '80's she was partners with her sister, by then Mrs. Robert Schneller, of Schneller's Meats on John St. in uptown Kingston, to create the popular "Upstairs", a combination gift / antique / luncheon / coffee and dessert shop. The sisters loved antique hunting together. Ruth did most of the dessert baking, which included Viennese cakes and tortes, all hand-made in the "old world" tradition; and she even assisted with the serving of these mouth-watering treats.
Ruth is survived by her three sons - Jack (of Plantsville, CT); Laurence and wife Barbara (of Malden, NY), his sons Ian and Robin; and Donald and wife Liz (of Cornwall, NY), along with their children Catherine and Nicholas; her sister Lore and husband Bob Schneller; and many nieces and nephews plus their children on both sides of the family. She is predeceased by her parents, husband John, and grandson Jason A. Jones, son of Donald.
Funeral services are to be held Friday, August 24 at Keyser Funeral Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY, between 6 and 9 PM, with prayer service at 7 PM. Burial of ashes will be privately held at a later date.
