Roswitha E. Lewis

Roswitha ''Rose'' E. Lewis, of Main Street, Esopus, NY, died Friday evening at her residence. She was born November 1, 1929 in Radevormwald, Germany to the late Fritz and Florentine (Dawid) Ertel.




She was married to the late Freeman "Dave" Lewis who died Decemeber 8th, 1996. She met her husband while he was serving in the Air Force and stationed in Germany. They wed and then with their family came back to the states.



Rose was a very active parishioner at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where she was the organist and choir director for 20 years. She was also a member of the Bible study group, was a member of the Mt. St. Alphonsus choir and worked for Sacred Heart RC Church at Mt. St. Alphonsus.




Her hobbies included music, landscaping and gardening around her home, traveling to her homeland in Germany, sewing and knitting. Most of all she enjoyed spending time around her beautiful home with her children and grandchildren.

Rose is survived by her daughters Juanita Lewis, Los Angeles, CA, Roxanne E. Brennan and her husband Matthew, Hopewell Junction, NY, sons Peter Lewis, Ontario, Canada, Arthur Lewis, Austin, TX, Douglas Lewis and his wife Lynda, Esopus, NY, and Daniel Lewis and his wife Karen, Kill Devil Hills, NC, grandchildren Claire Lewis, Coleen Rudolph, Jeffrey Lewis, Evan Lewis, Kyle Lewis, Connor Brennan and Meghan Lewis, sister of Mechtild Trautsch, brothers Suitbert, Wendel and Meinrad Ertel, all of Germany, dear friends Father Eugene Grohe and Robert "Bob" and Maryann Coisson, many nieces and nephews. Mother of the late Roger Lewis.




Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen. The family will receive their friends on Monday from 4 - 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart RC Church on Tuesday at 11am. Burial will be private at the discretion of the family.




The family suggests inlieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Hospice Of Ulster County, 34 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401 or Esopus Fire Department, PO Box 177, Esopus, NY 12429.
