Ross G. Leiching, 96, of Port Ewen, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014 peacefully at home with his family present. He was born August 23, 1917 in Port Ewen, to the late Joseph and Susan (Clark) Leiching. He was predeceased by his wife Olga (Terpening) Leiching.
Ross began working for the Cornell Steamboat Company in 1936 and later retired as a Tug Boat Mate for Red Star in 1974. His career was interrupted when he joined the US Army and served in the 184th Infantry Division during WWII.
He was a very active member of the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church for over 35 years where he had served on the board of trustees. He had also been a member of the Klyne Esopus Museum and the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Ross was an avid Yankee fan and gardener, who shared his vegetable harvest with friends and family.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph Leiching and his wife Susan of Ulster Park, Michael Leiching and his wife Kathleen of Saugerties, his grandchildren, David, Timothy & Stephanie, 10 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces & nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he is predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Clark, and Joseph Leiching, and his sister, Lillian Every.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen, where friends and family may visit on Thursday July 24th from 4 to 7pm. The funeral will be held on Friday at 10am at the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church, 151 W. Main St., Port Ewen, NY.
Burial will follow in Wiltwyck Cemetery, Kingston.
