Rose D. Schatzel, 98, a long time resident of Van Keuren Highway, moved into the Gates of Heaven on Saturday, August 3, 2013 after a stay at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine. She had just celebrated her 98th birthday on July 31 with her son and daughter.
Rose cherished spending time with her family and always made her home a warm and welcoming place for all to come and visit.
She had worked for Ferraro's Bowlerama and Mid City Lanes for over 40 years and had been a parishioner of St. Joseph's RC Church.
Rose was known for her competitive passion for bowling and was titled the "Queen of the Hudson Valley" for all her major accomplishments. Rose has won championship bowling matches and tournaments all over the U.S., including the NYS All Events title multiple times. She was a member and officer of the KWBA and in 1987 was inducted into the NYS Bowlers Hall of Fame in Jamestown, NY. She was the junior bowling coach at Ferraro's Bowlerama and Mid City Lanes for 25 years, mentoring hundreds of aspiring young bowlers. Rose had the 2nd highest women's bowling average in the U.S. in 1953 and was a true ground breaker in women's sports.
Rose was the daughter of the late Dominick and Teresa Manfro and was the youngest of 11 children. She leaves behind her loving family, John A. Schatzel and his wife Elaine, Pamela Schatzel and her husband Bill, grandchildren, Elizabeth, Carolyn, Jake, Nicole and Sarah and 6 great grand children. She was predeceased by her husband John L. Schatzel in 2001.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, the family will receive their friends on Wednesday from 3 - 7 pm. On Thursday the procession will form at funeral home at 9 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's RC Church at 10 am. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
