Robert V. Delanoy of Washington Avenue, Kingston died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 7, 2006. He was 88.
He was born in Kingston on April 16, 1918, a son of the late Charles W. and Catherine Hogan Delanoy. A class of '37 graduate of Kingston High School, he attended St. Lawrence University.
He entered the United States Marine Corps on June 16, 1941 and served with the 1st Division during WW II. He participated in the invasion of Guadacanal, New Guinea, Cape Gloucester and Russell Islands. He was discharged at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in October 1945.
He married Genevieve R. Hoagland in Prattsville on July 23, 1944. Formerly of Prattsville, Roxbury and then Grand Gorge, they returned to Kingston in 1952.
Active in Veteran and Fraternal organizations, he served as Past Commander of the Virgil E. Deyo Post 1327, Prattsville. He was Past Commander of the Greene County American Legion and Past Commander of Post 150, American Legion, Kingston. He was a life member of the Joyce - Schirick Post 1386, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Marine Corps League.
A Life Member of the Marine Corps League, he served as Past Commandant of the Ulster Detachment, Marine Corps League and Past Department Commandant of the Dept. of New York, Marine Corps League. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Edsons Marine Raider Association and honored at Quantico, VA in 1992.
Served as Chairman of the Board of the National Scholarship Foundation, Marine Corps League and as National Deputy Chief of Staff of the Marine Corps League.
In 1976 Mr. Delanoy was honored as Marine of the Year for the Ulster Detachment and Dept. of New York Marine of the Year. He received the Legion of Honor by the Chaplain of Four Chaplains at Temple University in 1988. The Kingston Veterans Assoc. honored Mr. Delanoy as Veteran of the Year in 1991.
Gov. Mario Cuomo presented him the Governor's Dog Tag Award in Albany in 1988.
He belonged to the Oasis Lodge #119, Free and Accepted Masons in Prattsville and a Life Member of the Mt. Star Oasis, Chapter #237, Windham.
Mr. Delanoy operated the family business, Delanoy Fuel Service. He then affiliated with Kingston Coal and Oil Co. as Vice President associated with Walter Davenport & Sons. He retired from Heritagenergy as Vice President in 1983.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Genevieve R. Delanoy, one son Larry C. Delanoy of Kingston, one daughter Holly Speirs and her husband Robert T. of Lake Katrine; one granddaughter Melissa Speirs.
A brother, Charles W. Delanoy, Col. USAF died September 21, 1999 in Melbourne, Florida.

Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Thursday 2-4 and 6-9 PM. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 12:00 at the funeral home. Rev. LeRoy Ness will officiate. Interment will be in Wiltwyck Cemetery.
