Robert ''Smitty'' H. Smith, Sr., 77, of Kingston, passed peacefully Wednesday evening, October 2, 2013 surrounded by his family at Golden Hill Health Care Center after a short illness. He was born October 5, 1935 in Utica, and was the son of the late Harry and the late Ruth Adams Smith.
He attended Kingston High School and enlisted and served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.
With his father, they had owned and operated Smith's Mobil Service, Broadway, Kingston, after that he worked for Tim Mauro Excavating, retiring in 2012.
Smitty was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed collecting guns. He was a lifetime member of the Upper Esopus Fish and Game Club, Lake Katrine Rod & Gun Club and Wittenberg Sportmens Club. He was the past fire commissioner for Kingston City Fire Department and enjoyed NASCAR.
He is survived by his children William "Smitty" C. Smith and his wife Kelly, Debra Carlson and her husband Jeff, Doreen Riggins and her husband Joe, Robert, Thomas, Charles and David Smith. His grandchildren Randi and Jordan Smith, Jessica Ellsworth, Jami Letersky and Mackenzie Riggins, great grandchildren Deanna and Jack Ellsworth, a dear friend Ora Freer and many nieces and nephews.
Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. Friends may call on Sunday from 2- 4 & 7 -9. The Celebration of Life service will be Monday at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
The interment service to follow at Wiltwyck Cemetery, Kingston with military honors provided by Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW.
