Robert G. "Bob" Berger, 79, of Union Center Road, Ulster Park, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 13, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on November 12, 1932 in New York City, the son of the late Gottfried and Elsie Nelson Berger, he was the beloved husband of Catheryn "Cathy" Berger, they were married August 12, 1956.
He was a graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1950. He then went to SUNY New Paltz, receiving his BS and Masters degree. He began his teaching career in the Arlington Central School District, initially working in special education; he then went into administration, retiring as assistant principal of the Arlington Middle School, after 35 years of service.
Bob was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, served on the church council, taught Sunday School, and with his wife, chaired the Fellowship Committee. He was very active in Rip Van Winkle Chapter, Boys Scouts of America, had been assistant Troop 9 Leader and very active with summer programs at Ten Mile River Camp. Active member and served on the board of the Klyne Esopus Historical Society, life member of the St. Remy Fire Department.
He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of New Paltz Golf Club, enjoyed bowling, bowling in the teacher's league and then the Senior Bowling league, avid fisherman and hunter. Enjoyed traveling and gardening.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving daughter; Mary Ann Berger, his sister in law, Marilyn Hermance, nieces and nephews, Judy Snyder and her husband Jim, Thomas Hermance and his wife Jamy, Karen Dwyer and her husband Tom, Allan Kent and his wife Debbie and Stephen Kent. He was predeceased by a sister Elsie Kent.
Entrusted to the Care of Eric Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3 - 6 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Thursday at 10:00 AM. Pastor James Rowe will officiate.
