Robert "Bob" F. Schwenk, 80, of Denver Road, Kingston, NY, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinebeck, NY. He was born October 12, 1927 in Kingston, NY to the late Frederick W. and Lulu Bruhn Schwenk.
He was married to Margaret "Peggy" Wilson Schwenk, they wed on November 25, 1950 at 1st Presbyterian Church, Kingston.
He had attended Kingston High School and graduated from Manlius Military Academy in Manlius New York, where he was a member of the band and glee club. He enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1945 - 1946 on the USS Chenango.
After the service he attended Hartwick College in Oneonta and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. At college he was a member of the Swing Band, Men's Glee Club and Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
After graduation from college he attended the American Institute of Baking in Chicago and then came home to join the Schwenk's Bakery, becoming the 3rd generation in the family business.
After the sale of the family business in 1969 he returned to school and earned his Nursing Home Administrative certificate from Cornell University. He then became the assistant administrator and then the administrator of the Ulster County Infirmary, now the Golden Hill Health Care Facility. He then went to work as the administrator of the Great Barrington Health Care Facility in Great Barrington, MA until his retirement in 1991. After retirement he worked for Ulster County BOCES as an auditor and courier.
He was a life long member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served several terms on the church council and several terms as the church treasurer. He belonged to the Bell Choir and was an active member of the Men's Breakfast Club. He was an avid NY Giants fan, enjoyed jogging, reading, cooking, baking and band concerts.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Robert W. Schwenk and his wife Susan of Rosendale, Kurt F. Schwenk, Kingston, daughter Nina C. Asch and her husband Robert of Saugerties, Amy E. Gerard and her husband Gregory of Rifton, grandfather of Christian F. Schwenk, Katherine M. Schwenk, Adam J. Schwenk and Nicholas R. Gerard, brother in law of Dorotha Cook of Haslett, MI,. several cousins, nieces and nephews. Father of the late Jeffrey A. Schwenk who died in June of 2005.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, where services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am Keyser Funeral Service, Rev. Robert N. Harris, officiating.
Burial in Montrepose Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9
