Robert E. Smith of Green Street, Port Ewen died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Benedictine Hospital. He was 75.
He was born in New Salem on December 15, 1933, a son of the late John J. and Josephine A. Steigerwald Smith. A graduate of Kingston High School, Bob married Joan M. Krueger on July 15, 1956.
From age 18 Bob worked at Hercules Powder Company. He retired from Dyno Nobel after 43 years as a lab technician.
A 30-year member of the 3rd Degree Kingston Council #275, Knights of Columbus, he served as Past Grand Knight. Involved in all facets of the Council, he served as Warden for many years, Past District Deputy and Past Hudson Valley Chapter Treasurer. A member of the Fourth Degree Assembly #750, Bob served on the Council's First and Second Degree Team and received the Chapter's "Knight of the Year" award in 2002.
A parishioner of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Port Ewen, he was a life member of the Port Ewen Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joan M. Smith, one daughter Sharon Mauceri and her husband Michael of Kingston, one sister Josephine Webster of Port Ewen, three grandchildren Christian, Robert and Arielle Mauceri.
Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Members of the Knights of Columbus will conduct a service on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The funeral procession will form on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Presentation Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery.
