Richard N. Amato, 75, of Kingston, passed peacefully Monday morning at the Kingston Hospital. He was born December 9, 1937, in Kingston, the son of the late James and Julia Nardi Amato. He had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1992. He was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1955. He then served in the United States Marine Corp from 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1958.
As a youngster, he was very active in sports which continued throughout life. He served as recreation commissioner under Mayor Frank Koenig, played in Men's Fast & Slow pitch softball leagues in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, and for many years played in the Men's over 30 basketball league. Was a member of three national softball championship teams in the late 90's and early 2000's. He also coached in the men's city slow pitch league and won three straight championships. He followed Men's Major Championship softball for over 30 years traveling all over the country for tournaments. Most recently he was serving the city as Bingo Inspector.
Richard is survived by his sister Carol M. Trowbridge and her husband Donald of Kingston, a brother James Amato, Fort Pierce, FL, many nieces, nephews and devoted cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his sisters Doris Smith and Patricia Milano.
Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, Friends may call on Thursday from 3 - 8 pm. The procession will form on Friday at 9 am and proceed to St. Colman's RC Church where at 10 am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
