Rhoda Lohre, age 95, died peacefully in the presence of family in her home in Hurley, New York, on June 29, 2023. Born in New York City on Christmas Day in 1927 to Selma and Marc Fox, Rhoda grew up in New York and went on to earn a teaching degree from Long Island University.
In 1948 Rhoda married Julian Lohre and soon after moved to Kingston, New York. She spent many years working at Yallum’s department store and Herzog’s Hardware Store. Rhoda was a member of Temple Emanuel, and was involved in various volunteer work including the Kingston Boys and Girls Club. She was an avid Frank Sinatra fan and enjoyed a vodka tonic in a stem glass. Later in life, Rhoda surprised all of us by becoming an impressive painter of Hudson Valley landscapes. Most recently, Rhoda began knitting and loved her Perfect Blend knitting friends.
Rhoda is survived by her children Nelson (her favorite, let’s be honest), Amy, Linda, Jordan and Julie. She also leaves behind those she was most proud of, her grandchildren Jenna, Marko and Jessica; and her great granddaughter Arianna. Rhoda is also survived by her god-daughter Jackie. Her husband Julian passed away in 1982.
Rhoda’s family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Hospice of Hudson Valley, as well as Rabbi Yael Romer of Congregation Emanuel. A private funeral was held graveside. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Kingston Boys and Girls Club or to the Cantor Julian C. Lohre Memorial Scholarship at Ulster County Community College.
