Raymond T. Andersen, 92, of Lebanon, NJ, died Friday, October 15, 2010 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ. He was a resident of Bernardsville, N. J. for more than 30 years. A native of Connelly, he was born November 23, 1917 in Connelly, to the late Andrew T. and the late Emma A. (Henke) Andersen. He attended local schools and was a graduate of New York University and Columbia University and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School
A Captain of Artillery in World War II, he was awarded 2 Bronze Stars and the Croix De Guerre, with Vermeil Star, by the French for his decisive action in containing an unexpected German Bridgehead across the west bank of the Rhine. A Major in the U. S. Army Retired Reserve, the secretary of the Army named him a Distinguished Member of the Regular Army 62nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
After 28 years he left Bankers Trust as a Senior Vice President, Lending Policy and Director of Bankers International Corporation, to be Senior Vice Chairman of the Franklin New York Corporation and Franklin National Bank. He was elected Deputy to Chairman Joseph W. Barr, former Secretary of the Treasury. Their efforts to prevent the insolvency of the bank were unavailing. Mr. Andersen's efforts were the source of praise by the Comptroller of the Currency in testimony before a Committee of U.S. Congress. He joined the European American Bank, its successor, as an Executive Vice President and retired in 1982 as President and CEO of Euramlease, Inc., its subsidiary.
He was a Director of the Unity Fire and General Ins. Co., the General Security Assurance Corp., the Urbaine Life Reinsurance Co.; member of the Corporation and Chairman of the Retirement Board of Morristown Memorial Hospital; Chairman Finance Committee and Member of the Executive Committee; Board of World Missions, LCA; a founding Director and Member of the Executive Committee of Technoserv, Inc.; President and Director Harvard Advanced Management Assoc, New York; Trustee, the Beard School; Director Westside Assoc. of Commerce; Trustee New York Institute of Credit. In 1964 President Tubman of Liberia named him a Grand Commander of the Star of Africa for economic and financial services to that country.
Raymond is survived by his son; Brian Andersen of Bethlehem Township, NJ, daughters; Susan Andersen of Adamant, Vermont, and Nancy Andersen, M.D. of Loveland, Ohio, five grand children, a son-in-law Bert Nelson, and daughter in-law Thelma Andersen. His beloved wife of 55 years, Anne Thomas Andersen, predeceased him in 2001
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. Graveside services will be held at Montrepose Cemetery, 75 Montrepose Avenue, Kingston, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with full military honors provided by Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW.
