Philip Terpening, 63, of Rosendale, died suddenly Wednesday evening at the Kingston Hospital. He was born July 8, 1946 in Kingston, to the late Daniel and Edith (Petersen) Terpening.
A life long area resident, he was raised in Port Ewen and has lived in Rosendale for the past 31 years.
He was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1964; he attended Murray State College in Kentucky. He had earned his associates degree and bachelor's degree in Political science.
Phil served in the US Army Reserves, 854th Army Corp of Engineers, Kingston. .
He had been employed by Ethan Allen Employment and Fehr Brothers in Saugerties prior to his retirement.
He was a very active member of the United Reformed Church of Rosendale, having served as an elder, active on various committees, taught some of the church's confirmation classes and volunteered to help at the church dinners.
Phil had served on the Rosendale Town Board, was Town of Rosendale Supervisor from 2001 to 2003 and was currently serving in the Ulster County legislature where he was chairman of the Labor Relations committee.
Some of his major accomplishments as Supervisor included the cost effective, state of the art Geothermal Community Center, kept the town budget to single digit increases, obtained over $160,000 in Grant monies and saved a $60,000 HUD Grant for Water Tower. He had served as chairman of the Rosendale Democratic Committee, was a founding member Klyne Esopus Historical Society and on the 2004 nominating committee, was a member of the Century House Historical Society in Rosendale, past member and Three time President of the Rondout Valley Lion's Club, and former member of the Rosendale Library Board and three time chair of the Library Fair and former member of the Rosendale Street Festival Committee.
Philip is survived by his daughter Heather Terpening of Minneapolis, MN and his brother Daniel Terpening, Port Ewen, and his nieces Melinda McKnight and Melanie Terpening - Marino.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, 216 Broadway, and Port Ewen. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 - 8 pm. Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am. The Rev. Nickolas Miles, officiating. Burial in Mt. Marion Cemetery.
