Peter John Kowalenko, 94, of Kingston, formerly of West Hurley, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus. He was born July 13, 1920 in New York City to the late John and Mary (Spurgesh) Kowalenko.
He was married to May (Johnson) Kowalenko, they wed on November 19th 1944. Peter served his country in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Ranger in the North Atlantic. He worked as an insurance agent at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 25 years and later at Ulster Savings Bank as a benefits coordinator.
Peter was a parishioner of St. John's RC Church in Woodstock. He was a member of the Junior Chamber Commerce, one of the founders of the Kingston National Little League, was a member of Joyce Sherrick Post #1386 VFW and the American Legion Post # 150. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, gardening, spending time with his family and making people laugh.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughters, Linda Moon of Kingston and Christine Kowalenko of Kingston, his grandchildren, Kelly Keene and her husband Howard, Jennifer Kammerzel and her husband Scott, Peter Millham and his wife Karen, and Joshua Moon, 5 great grandchildren, as well as several nephews.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Tuesday September 2nd from 4 to 7pm. The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Wiltwyck Cemetery, Kingston.
