Peter J. Camp of Hurley, NY, entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2024, at home after a long illness. Pete was born on June 8, 1933, in Kingston, NY, son of the late Peter J. Camp and Margaret Camp.
Pete grew up in Kingston, NY, and attended Kingston High School, playing for both the junior and varsity basketball teams and graduated from KHS in 1952. After high school, Pete worked for Hercules Powder Company for a short time before enlisting in the Navy, from which he was honorably discharged. On July 24, 1955, Pete married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Patricia, at St. Joseph’s Church in Kingston and they shared over 60 years of marriage prior to Pat’s passing in October of 2015.
Pete worked for IBM for over 37 years at both the Poughkeepsie and Kingston locations. After retiring from IBM, Pete then worked with the grounds crew at Wiltwyck Golf Club for many years before leaving to help Pat due to her declining health.
Pete enjoyed working around the house and maintaining his yard. He enjoyed watching sports, having a cold beer, or two, on a hot day and spending time with his family and friends. He was devoted to his wife and was an amazing dad. He was fond of spending summer vacations at the beach and taking local ski trips in the winter with his family. In their later years, Pete and Pat enjoyed travelling with their dear friends, the late Helen and Bob Scheffel. One of Pete’s favorite memories was in 2016 when he participated in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight where he and his daughter, Susan, traveled to Washington, DC for the day along with other veterans being honored for their service to their country.
Pete’s family would like to acknowledge the remarkable care and attention he received from his caregivers who always treated Pete with the utmost care and respect. Thank you, Farrah, Michelle and Pat. You are all truly amazing.
In addition to his parents and wife, Pete is pre-deceased by his two sisters, Regina “Jean” Davis and Margaret “Peggy” Cashin; and two grandsons, Ryan Nalley and Matthew Nalley. Pete is survived by his daughters, Patricia Nalley and her husband, Mike, of Mason, OH; and Susan Smith and her husband, Bryan, of Hurley, NY; grandson, Patrick Nalley; great-granddaughter, Cori Nalley; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
One of Pete’s favorite sayings would be “Just remember for every good deed you do, you get a brick on your house in heaven.” We would like to think Mom and Dad have a very nice house in heaven. We love you both.
