Norman S. Levine, of Oak Mountain Farm Road, Boiceville, died Friday, June 15, 2007 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. He was 81. Mr. Levine has been a resident of Boiceville since 1968.
He was born December 29, 1925 in Brooklyn, a son of the late Gershon and Sarah Resjinski Levine.
Mr. Levine graduated from Hofstra University where he served as the editor of the newspaper, The Chronicle. He received his Masters in American Literature from NYU.
Mr. Levine sold used and rare books by mail and in bookshops on Long Island and the Hudson Valley. He owned and operated Editions in Boiceville. A mail-order innovator, in 1948, Mr. Levine opened a mail-order version of a 4th Avenue used bookshop, accessible to customers from anywhere through the mail.
In the 1950's and early 1960's, he worked in politics in Nassau County, managing seveal campaigns and being elected the Democratic party chair of Levittown and the Town of Hempstead.
Surviving is his wife, Joan Berry Levine, two sons, David of Lebanon, NJ, Jonathan 'Jay' Levine of Rockville, MD; two step-sons, Jonathan Schmid of New Canaan, CT and Jeffrey Schmid of Buffalo. His first wife, Faith, lives in Rockville, MD. Eleven grandchildren also survive.
A remembrance coffee hour form friends and family will be held at the Olive Library in West Shokan from 10 am - 12:00 noom on Saturday, June 23.
