Norman Edwin Goodwin of Daytona, FL and formerly of Kingston, NY passed peacefully on November 22, 2023.
Norman was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada on December 8, 1926 to Walter Goodwin and Jessie (Liscoumb) Goodwin. Although he was born with spina bifida, Norman had a very determined spirit and lived his life fully. He was educated in schools in Ontario, Canada, graduating from Northern Business College in Owen Sound, Ontario. Norman enjoyed sharing stories from his younger years in Owen Sound and he had some interesting jobs there including being a deckhand with the Merchant Marines on the Upper Lakes and St. Lawrence Transportation Company, Ltd.
Norman moved to the Highlands Country Club in Garrison, NY in 1949 to work and support his father’s golf career. In 1955 he proudly became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. Norman worked for the travel reimbursement accounting department of IBM in Kingston, NY from 1956 until his retirement in 1989.
On June 8, 1958 he married Doreen Ellen Hayes in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. They settled in Kingston, NY in 1961 and had two children Norman and Marianne. The Goodwin’s were members of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where Norman was on the vestry, was the treasurer for decades, sang in the choir and mowed the lawn.
The family enjoyed many camping trips over the years including a cross country trip in 1972, taking a month to see just about everything. As empty nesters, Norman and Doreen enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean and group trips to places like Greece and Turkey with their very good friends George and Mary Mine. Norman and Doreen moved to Ormond Beach, Florida in 2019.
Norman was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Doreen on February 19, 2020. He was also predeceased by his siblings: Walter G.H., Warren C., Walter F., Nora Catherine Bosco, Patricia K. Lysko and Jessie E. Holmes.
Surviving are his son Norm and his wife Karen and their children Kendra, Trevor and Derek, all of Florida and his daughter Marianne and her husband George Ananew of Wallkill, NY. There are also many nieces and nephews in the USA, Canada and Scotland.
Norman will be remembered for his lifelong love of golf, enjoying a cold beer (or two) and love for his family. Also for his vast array of groan inducing (but clever) corny jokes.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 1:00PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 207 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY. A private interment of the ashes will follow.
Guests are invited to join the family for refreshments in the St. John’s Parish Hall afterward.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Angel Food East (C/O St. John’s Episcopal Church) or to the St. John’s Episcopal Church, 207 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401, in memory of Norman E. Goodwin.
