Meyer F. Lieberman, formerly of Woodstock died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home. He was 89. He was born in New York City, the son of the late Louis and Alice Beck Lieberman. Meyer served from 1942 1945 in the US Coast Guard during WW II as a pharmacist's mate in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Upon discharge he attended the Art Students League in New York City where he studied under Reginald Marsh. Meyer later studied with Andrew Stasik at Pratt Graphic Center in New York City. Meyer had his first one-man show in 1955 at the Jewish Museum in New York City and has shown in galleries in this country as well as abroad. His work is included in the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum of New York, Columbia University, Rare Book & Manuscript Division, Beit HaNassi (President's Residence) Jerusalm, and in many private collections in the USA, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Holland, England and Israel. From 1964 to 1968 he was an instructor in drawing, painting and composition at the Art Life Craft Studio in Manhattan. He also taught drawing, collage painting and composition at Temple Emanuel, Yonkers from 1966 to 1974, and from 1967 to 1978 at the Flatbush Jewish Center. After moving to Woodstock in 1978, he was active in Congregation Ahavath Israel, Kingston and the Woodstock Jewish Congregation. Meyer started a painting class for seniors in 1982 under the auspices of the Woodstock Senior Recreation Committee. From 1985 to 1988 he taught in the Gifted and Talented Program in the Onteora School District. He also conducted a children's art class in his studio for many years. Active in the Kingston and Woodstock art community, Meyer is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in World Jewry, and the International Directory of Art. His wife Josefa Nina Lieberman, Ph.D. died April 17, 2012. Surviving is his sister in law, Gabriele E. Margules of Kingston and many dear friends in the art community, Woodstock Jewish Congregation and Congregation Ahavath Israel. A service of sharing will be conducted on Friday at 9:00 am at Simpson Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. with Rabbi Jonathan Kligler. Interment will follow in Wellwood Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY.
