Maurice ("Vic") Reedy, beloved husband, father and grandfather THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA � Maurice Vernon Reedy 83, died peacefully at Cornerstone Hospice surrounded by his beloved family on February 13, 2011 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was a loving man who will be missed tremendously. Maurice was born on November 7, 1927 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the youngest of five children of the late Walter and Gertrude (McCoy) Reedy. Maurice attended East St. Louis Senior High School and Collinsville Township High School, graduating at age 16. He could not wait to serve his country in World War II and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 with a friend as soon as they became of age. His tour of duty took him to the Pacific Islands and it was in the Navy where Maurice picked up the nickname "Vic", as he is widely known.
Vic attended Southern Illinois University and Washington University. He started his career at Shell Oil Company Research Laboratory as a project engineer responsible for the design and construction of automated test facilities. Vic then joined IBM Corporation as an engineer, working in many areas including banking system terminals, personal computers and the SAGE/NORAD systems, ending his 32-year career as Department Manager in Development Engineering in Boca Raton, FL. Although Vic lived most of his adult years in Kingston, N.Y., he also lived in Missouri, Canada, North Carolina and Florida and traveled extensively for IBM throughout the U.S., Europe and the Far East.
While working for IBM, he served as Justice of the Peace in the Town of Kingston, NY, owned and operated a restaurant and nightclub near Woodstock, NY and obtained licenses as a real estate broker and income tax preparer. His skills in carpentry, masonry, electrical and plumbing were much relied upon by his family and friends and he worked on countless home projects over the years including the design and construction of a complete home. Vic had many hobbies and interests including pitching and managing a slo-pitch softball team in Kingston, NY. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, shuffleboard tournaments and playing cards with his family and friends. He followed US politics closely and was an avid NFL fan. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Vic will be forever remembered and loved by his wife of 44 years, Barbara, and eight adoring children and step-children: Steven C. Reedy and wife Bernadette of New Jersey, Jo Ann Reuben and husband Marc of New York, James B. Reedy of New Jersey, Ronald R. Reedy and wife Terry of New Jersey, Susan Reedy, wife of the late Douglas Reedy of New Jersey, their mother Ruth Manning of Florida, Cherie Levy and husband Robert of Michigan, Richard Buser and his wife Esther of New York, Paul Buser and his wife Rachel of Mississippi and Lisa Buser of North Carolina. Vic is also survived by seven precious grandchildren: Rachel Reuben, Jeremy Reuben and wife Kathleen, David Levy, Jordan Levy, Samantha Reedy, Cassandra Reedy and Jillian Reedy; one precious great-granddaughter, Makenna Reed Reuben; his sister Alma Hamilton and husband John of Illinois; a lifelong caring and loving friend Vicky Dye of New York who he loved as a sister; and many other dear friends and extended family members. Vic joins in eternal rest his parents, his brother, Ray, sisters Esther and Loretta, and his beloved son, Douglas Reedy, who passed away in February 2010.
A celebration of life will be conducted on Saturday, March 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home 411 Albany Ave, Kingston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162.
