Massie S. Mehl, 82, of Port Ewen, NY died Saturday, September 13, 2014 at his home.
Massie was born in St. Albans, VT, and was a son of the late Jacob & Lena Berger Mehl.
After graduating Rutland High School in Vermont he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean conflict for four years. He was responsible for saving many lives. He then enrolled in the University of Vermont (UVM). During his college years he had a full time job in order to pay his way through college. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.
Massie's love of Judaism led to his involvement in Bnai Brith and took him to Israel. He was a strong supporter of Israel. Massie was a member of Temple Emanuel in Kingston. He was a Third Degree Mason from the time he graduated college, a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a disabled American Veteran. There is a Yiddish word that sums up Massiehe was a mensch. Admirable, honorable and much loved. He spent nearly his whole career in retail, starting with Hi-Lo in Port Ewen, NY. Ultimately, he opened up his own stores Fashion Town in Kingston, NY, Modern Miss in Wappingers Falls, NY and, later, Valley Casuals in Vestal, NY. Later in life, Massie worked at Johnson Ford in Kingston, NY.
Massie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandy Pigula Mehl of Port Ewen, whom he married on January 21, 1961. He passionately loved Sandy and adored his family. He is survived by a daughter, Elaine B. Trott of Kingston, a son, Brad A. Mehl and his wife Yifat Kedar of Livingston, NJ, a brother, Froman Mehl and his wife Etta of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, a sister, Shirley Myers of West Hartford, CT, a brother, Paul Mehl of Lake City, FL, five grandchildren, Joshua Trott, David Trott, Aliza Kedar-Mehl, Maya Kedar-Mehl and Shira Kedar-Mehl and a son in law, Mark Trott of Lake Katrine. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Temple Emanuel on Albany Avenue in Kingston, NY with Rabbi Yael Romer officiating at 1:00 PM.
Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery.
Shiva will be held at the Mehl home on Monday from 6-8 PM with a minyan service at 7:00 PM. It will continue each night through Thursday from 6-8 PM with a minyan service at 7:00 PM. On Friday, the family will sit Shiva privately and attend services at Temple Emanuel. On Saturday, Shiva will resume with a minyan service from 7-8 PM. The closing Shiva will take place on Sunday from 6-8 PM with a minyan service at 7:00 PM.
