Marilyn Hershkowitz Liebowitz, 75, of Saugerties, died Monday, April 12, 2021 at New Paltz Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was a daughter of the late Oscar & Sally LaScher Hershkowitz.
Marilyn graduated from Pratt Institute, with a degree in art.
Marilyn was a talented painter, sculptor, and potter. Walking with her through a museum was illuminating as she knew art and how to convey its power and importance to people who did not. She taught sculpture at Mountain Laurel Waldorf School in New Paltz and was committed to conveying the beauty of all intellectual pursuits
She married the love of her life, Barry Liebowitz. He was an engineer, specializing in wind power as an alternative for fossil fuels as an energy source. Together, Marilyn and Barry forged a loving and mutually supportive life in Saugerties, a life made meaningful by their shared commitments to Anthroposophical philosophy and practices. Their beautiful home was enhanced by their own artistic creations and by those of their friends. Their home was a testament to truth and beauty.
Barry’s death on June 17, 2013 was a deep blow to Marilyn. But she persevered as a teacher, sister, cousin, and friend to many. It was with deep sorrow that all of those who loved and respected her learned of the heart problems that eventually led to her death.
Marilyn is survived by her brother Barry Hersh, his wife Patty, nephews Samuel, Israel, and Meshullam, 15 grand nieces and nephews, and 3 beloved cousins, Richard Hersh, Gerald Hersh, and Deborah Gewertz. She is mourned as well by colleagues, friends, and students.
Marilyn was a very generous, giving person.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 6:30 PM at the Simpson-Hammerl Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave.
Interment will be held privately.
