In Loving Memory of Marie J. Papa

January 27, 1944 – February 24, 2025

In the quiet of her cherished home and prayers ascended like incense to Heaven, surrounded by the embrace of those she loved most, Marie Jeanette Papa, our beloved matriarch was called to eternal rest on February 24, 2025. With the holy names of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph upon her lips, she surrendered her soul to the Divine embrace, completing a journey of faith, love, and unwavering devotion. Though our hearts ache with the weight of her passing, we find solace in the promise of our faith – that she has been received into the arms of Our Lord, reunited with her beloved husband, Arthur, in the presence of the Almighty.

Born on a crisp winter’s Thursday in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Marie was the daughter of Santo and Theresa Trombettini, whose rich Italian heritage shaped her unwavering devotion to faith, family, and tradition. For 61 years, was the devoted wife of Arthur J. Papa, who preceded her in death on December 23, 2023. Their love was a testament to the sacred bond of marriage—one of sacrifice, laughter, faith, and an unbreakable foundation built upon God’s grace. Though Arthur’s passing left an irreplaceable void, Marie carried on with the same quiet strength and dignity that defined her. Together, they raised eight extraordinary children—Christina, Emanuel, Gina, Dawn, Kim,

Arthur Jr., Nicholas, and Michael—and through them, their love multiplied into 24 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring legacy of a woman whose heart was vast enough to embrace them all. A legacy built not in wealth or accolades, but in the boundless love she poured into every soul she encountered.

A woman of formidable strength, she carried herself with quiet authority, tempered always by humility and tenderness. She was stern yet fair, unwavering yet kind, a pillar upon which her family leaned. Her laughter – bright and infectious – reminded us that joy is not found in the grand gestures but in the simple, beautiful moments of everyday life.

Marie was a sanctuary, her embrace a solace that could mend even the weariest of souls, a beacon of faith in a world too often shadowed by doubt. She possessed a rare and precious gift— the ability to make each person feel as though they were the most important in the world. A conversation with her was a symphony of understanding, her words infused with wisdom, compassion, and just the right measure of gentle candor. When she wrapped you in her arms, the worries of life melted away, replaced by an undeniable certainty that, in that moment, all was well, burdens lightened, worries melted, and the weary found solace. She provided a sanctuary of warmth, whispers of reassurances, her hugs were a silent promise that love endures, that kindness heals, and that family is the truest sanctuary.

Marie’s life was an embodiment of the traditional Roman Catholic faith she held so dearly. She found profound joy in the rosary’s sacred rhythm, a disciple of Christ in the truest sense, and the unwavering truths of Holy Catholic Church. To Marie life was but a pilgrimage toward her heavenly home. She prayed with fervor, loved with unrestraint, and guided with a wisdom that was once gentle and resolute.

Her kitchen was her ministry, filled with the aroma of simmering sauces, her meals a sacrament of love that wrapped around visitors like a familiar lullaby. She was a masterful cook, not simply preparing meals but orchestrating moments. No one left her home without a full belly and a fuller heart, for she understood that nourishment was both physical and spiritual bread for the body, kindness for the soul. To sit at her table was to be enveloped in tradition, in laughter, in the sacred act of breaking bread as a family and to remind each person who entered her home that they belonged.

Marie was a mother to many, not just in name but undeniably. She and Arthur fostered countless children, providing them with the warmth and stability of a home where love was unconditional and faith unwavering. She knew nursery rhymes as well as she knew Scripture, her voice a lullaby of comfort to generations of restless little ones and in doing so, she soothed not only children but all who sought comfort in her presence.

To know her was to love her. To love her was to be changed forever. She was a woman of rare substance - stern yet fair, strong yet tender, a pillar of steadfast devotion whose love bound the

family together with a grace that she exhibited the virtues of the Blessed Mother herself, which she strived to imitate everyday of her life. She was, in every sense, a light in the darkness.

Now she rests in the arms of her Savior, reunited with her beloved Arthur and the loved ones who journeyed before her. Though we grieve, we do not grieve without hope, for we trust in the promise of eternal life. Even in her final days, surrounded by priests, nuns, and family who prayed for her unceasingly, she remained a witness to God’s grace. With a heart overflowing with love, she called each person by name, ensuring they knew what they had always felt—her love was eternal.

Marie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Arthur J. Papa, who awaited her in eternity. She is survived by her beloved brother, Al, her eight children—Christina (Carl), Emanuel (Kim), Gina (John), Dawn (Nicolette), Kim (Kenney), Arthur Jr. (Colleen), Nicholas (Heather), and Michael—her adoring 24 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of her spirit within them.

Her life will be honored in a visitation on Friday, February 28th, from 5 PM to 8 PM at Keyser Funeral and Cremation Service, with the Rosary recited at 7:30 PM. A Requiem Mass will be offered for the repose of her soul on Saturday, March 1st, at 11:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Novitiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Our Savior (https://www.daughtersofmary.net/building/#ways-to- donate ) —a fitting tribute to a woman whose life was a hymn of love, faith, and boundless generosity.

Marie Jeanette Papa, your love was a cathedral of warmth, your life a testament to grace. Though our hearts ache in your absence, we rejoice in the knowledge that you have spoken the words we all long for:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (2nd epistle of St. Paul to Timothy, chapter 4 verse 7)

Rest in peace, sweet grandma. Your love endures beyond the veil of time.
