Margaret C. Ortstein, 102, of Lake Katrine, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home. She was born June 24, 1908, in Bad Bellingen, Germany, to the late Lorenz and Margarete Bornkessel Ortstein. She came to the United States aboard the S.S. George Washington, arriving at Ellis Island on April 15, 1912. She later became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
She graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor's degree in 1930.
Margaret enjoyed a long history of employment, working as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper with Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, Luchow's Restaurant of NYC, and Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. She retired at the age of 77 years from the Reynolds Organization of Manhattan.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her brothers William and Carl Lawrence, niece Margaret Flanagan, and grandnephew James Flanagan.
She is survived by her nieces Gloria Hartley of Tennessee and Eileen Brown of Owosso, Michigan; grandnephew John Flanagan of Chester, NY; grandnieces Anne Flanagan Kelly of Hurley, NY, and her children, Timothy and Brigid; Ellen Flanagan Kenny of Hamilton, MA, and her children, Michael and Colin; Peggy Flanagan of Gloucester, MA, and her husband, Joseph Napolitano; and many other grandnieces and grandnephews in Tennessee and Michigan.
Entrusted to the care of the A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, NY, 12401.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Kingston on Saturday, Feb. 19th, at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ten Broeck Commons Activity Fund, One Commons Drive, Lake Katrine, NY, 12449.
