Marg Garvila

June 28, 1943 — August 12, 2021

E. Margaret Garvila, of Hurley, NY, passed away on Thursday August 12, 2021 at home. She was born June 28, 1943 in Sharon, CT, daughter of the late Joseph and Edna (Warren) Horak. Marg was married to her loving husband of 54 years, Joseph L. Garvila, Sr.

Marg was a graduate of SUNY Ulster, SUNY Empire State College, and Fordham University where she received her Master's Degree in Social Work. She also completed many additional clinics and seminars including A.D.E.C. - Certified Educator and Grief Counselor. Marg ran her own private practice as a Psychotherapist and Certified Thanatologist (LCSWR CT), in Stone Ridge, NY for many years.

Marg worked for Hospice, Inc. for 21 years as an educator, group facilitator, counselor and volunteer. She worked as a counselor and group facilitator for Project Liberty (9/11). Marg facilitated groups for families who experienced a loss of a loved one by suicide for Hospice, Inc. as well as for the Mental Health Association. She has worked as a counselor and group facilitator for a hospital Detoxification Unit, counselor for Ulster/Greene ARC and as a hospital discharge planner. She is a member of a Critical Incident Team. She has worked as a 10-year veteran of a hospital patient team, a soup kitchen worker and an Ulster Literacy Tutor.

She enjoyed tennis, swimming, and taking educational courses. She enjoyed traveling and would make plans and say "here we go" to her husband Joe. They especially enjoyed traveling throughout Europe. But most of all, her joy and love was her family and friends.

Marg is survived by her husband, Joseph L. Garvila, Sr., her children, Joseph L. Garvila, Jr., and Catherine Quinn and her husband Dennis, her grandchildren, Justin Garvila, Kaelan Quinn, Mackenzie Quinn, Emma Garvila, and Madysen Quinn, her sister-in-law, Mary Sidoti, her niece, Maura Vo and her husband Son, as well as other dear family and friends. Marg is preceded in death by her brothers, Donald Horak and Joseph "Jerry" Horak.

Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401, where family and friends may visit on Sunday August 15, 2021 from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral procession will form at 9:30am on Monday August 16, 2021 at the funeral home and will proceed to St. Joseph's RC Church, 242 Wall Street, Kingston, NY 12401 where at 11am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
