Marcia Gikner, 76, formerly of Woodstock, NY passed away on February 9th, 2009, after a brave battle with cancer in Bloomfield, CT.
Marcia was born in the Bronx on June 27, 1932, a daughter of the late Wiliam and Sarah Mankuta Simon. She graduated from City College with a B.A. in Sociology. On June 16, 1957, Marcia married Daniel Gikner.
Marcia had worked in the field of Social Work and Mental Health, and upon her retirement continued working with children through day care. She volunteered her time at Angel Food East, Kingston, an organization that provides meals to clients who are HIV positive. Marcia was a member of Temple Emanuel in Kingston. Marcia was an avid reader, an excellent cook, and enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends.
Marcia had lived in Woodstock for 40 years and had recently moved to Bloomfield, CT.
One brother, Sol Simon and three sisters Anne Fishman, Netta Kahn and Harriet Katz all died previously. Marcia is survived by her loving husband, Daniel; two daughters Amy Hershfield and her husband Joel of Simsbury, CT and Dr. Jan Ferris and her husband John of Essex Junction, VT; five grandchildren William, Benjamin and Noah Ferris, Samantha and Sarah Hershfeld; a brother-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marcia's kindness and warmth touched so many people and she will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel, 243 Albany Avenue in Kingston. Rabbi Yael Romer will officiate. Burial will follow at Montrepose Cemetery.
