Mae Osterweil

d. May 10, 2012

Mae Osterweil died on May 10, 2012 at 97 years of age at her home in Eddy Village Green, Cohoes, NY. She was born on September 1, 1914, the daughter of Louis Levine and Regina Meerbaum Levine in Newark, New Jersey. Starting in her youth, she was an avid reader devouring books [and chocolates] late into the night. She graduated Central High School and briefly attended what was then the University of Newark (now part of Rutgers). She married Jack I. Osterweil in 1942 and they first lived in Newark and then South Orange until 1977 when they retired to Pompano Beach and later Boca Raton, Florida. Jack died in 1990 and Mae stayed in Florida until the age of 90 when she moved to the Albany, NY area to be closer to her two children. Mae loved games of chance. A devoted card player for most of her adult life, she was equally enthusiastic about bingo in her nineties. She took pride in her home and her ability to decorate with panache. She loved spirited political debate, was a lifelong devotee of FDR, and was a frequent writer of letters to the editor. She is survived by her daughter Diana Richter (spouse Richard Richter) of Great Barrington, Ma., her son Marc Osterweil (spouse Andrew Weiss) of Margaretville, NY, grandchildren Randi McCray (spouse Brian McCray) of San Diego, Ca., Michael Gildenberg (spouse Sandy Burrows) of Highland Park, NJ and five great grandchildren: Taylor, Carly and Jake McCray and Samantha and Ethan Gildenberg. Services and interment will be private
