Lewis Marshall Neporent, M.D. of Twin Ponds Drive, Kingston died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at home. He was 79.
He was born April 24, 1930 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late William and Anna Hurwitz Neporent.
He attended Hartford schools and received his BS from Washington University in St. Louis and received his MS from Cornell Univ. in Ithaca. He received his MD from SUNY Syracuse Medical Center. He served his residencies at Bellevue Hospital, Sloane Kettering and Memorial Hospital and Montefiore Hospitals in New York City.
Dr. Neporent was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Geriatrics. He was also on the faculties of New York Hospital, Albany Medical Center, Vassar Brothers Hospital, and New York Medical College. He served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine at both Kingston and Benedictine Hospitals and on the Board of Directors of Kingston Hospital. He was a founder of the Mid-Hudson Rural Family Practice Residency Program and served there as instructor of Internal Medicine. He practiced Internal Medicine in Kingston for 40 years. He was a member and President of the Hudson Valley Society of Internal Medicine and served on the State Board for many years and served as liason to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New York State. He was a member of the American Medical Association and served as President of the Ulster County Medical Society.
Dr. Neporent was a member of the Kingston Lions Club for 47 years and served in many offices. He received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award and Lion of the Year Award. He was a founder and original member of the Lions Club Roaring Pride band. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club. He was a member of the UCCC concert band.
He was a gifted magician and served as President of the Society of Magicians Al Baker Assmebly. He taught courses in magic for UCCC and also for many young aspiring magicians in the Hudson Valley. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was a friend and colleague and physician to many famous magicians including Cardini, Walter Gibson and Blackstone.
He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the YMCA and a Board member of the Colonial Cooperative Insurance Co. He was a member of the Wiltwyck Golf Club. He was an expert skier and paddle ball player and a regular member of the Y. He was a member of Temple Emanuel.
Surviving is his wife, Arlene Semilof Neporent whom he married on June 24, 1956. Also surviving are two sons, Mark Neporent and his wife Lisa of Armonk and Richard Neporent of Ft. Lee, NJ; two daughters, Elizabeth Neporent and her husband Jay Shafran of New York City and Jill Neporent and her husband Theodore Heske of Suwanee, GA; a sister, Rita Ruzansky and her husband Marvin of Old Lyme, CT; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel, Jeremy and Matthew Neporent; Julian Heske and Skylar Shafran. Also surviving are beloved friends, Dr. Gilbert Wildstein and his wife Lynn of Atlanta, GA and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at Temple Emanuel at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston.
Shiva will be observed at the residence on Thursday until 8:00 PM with a Minyon at 7:00 PM; Friday from 12 - 2:00 PM and Saturday from 7 - 9 PM and Sunday at the home of Mark and Lisa Neporent in Armonk.
