Leona E McGregor, 93, of Hurley, formerly of Port Ewen, passed Tuesday evening, May 27, 2014 at Health Alliance Hospital, Broadway Campus, Kingston, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 29, 1921 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of the late Thomas James and Agatha Pelot McCurrie.
During WW II she was employed by the Canadian Meat Packers working as comptroller. After WW II, she married John Allan McGregor on June 21st, 1947. Allan worked for NY Central RR and the LIRR, and for many years they had to move often due to work. Eventually they settled in Long Island and both became Naturalized Citizens in 1956. While in Long Island, she worked as a dental hygienist. They retired to this area in 1976.
She was an active volunteer at the Benedictine Hospital, had been very involved with Mended Hearts and active in the Railroad Old Timers Club.
Her husband Allan died on March 20, 1995, Leona is survived by her children Heather Ann Rosenthal and her husband Matt of Hurley, Laurie Anne Smith and her husband Wayne of Lake Katrine and Gregory Scott McGregor and his wife Patrice of Simsbury, CT, her grandchildren Betsy McGregor, Douglas McGregor and his wife Joanne, Jennifer Heiselmann, Meaghan Tartaglia and her husband Stan, Eric Rosenthal, Shannon Smith and five great grandchildren. Her sisters Goldie MacDonald of Ottawa and Betty Rankin of Vancouver, She was predeceased by her sisters Bernice Murphy and Shirley LaFave and a brother Barney McCurrie,
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen. The service will be private. Inurnment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Ottawa, Canada.
