L. Larry Jacobs, Cantor Emeritus of Congregation Ahavath Israel, formerly of Kingston died Saturday, October 22, 2005 in Boynton Beach, FL. He was 92.
He was born in New York City on May 18, 1913, a son of the late Rev. Henry and Hannah Feldman Jacobowitz. After his marriage to Sylvia Wieselthier on May 30, 1936, they moved to Kingston in 1939. A member and past president of Congregation Ahavath Israel for over fifty years, Mr. Jacobs served as Cantor. He was bestowed Cantor Emeritus by the Congregation. he belonged to B'nai Brith.
For 35 years, he was a designer and pattern maker for Country Club Frocks, Inc., Kingston and owned and operated Shane Fashions and Shane Apparel (dress company) formerly of Kingston, NY. He also owned and operated the former Huntington Hotel in uptown Kingston in the 1950's. He served as a former board member of the Midtown Business Association. Mr. Jacobs retired in 1975 and began to maintain a residence in Pompano Beach, FL and then Sunrise, FL.
An avid golfer and bowler, Mr. Jacobs was a former member of Wiltwyck Golf Club and was instrumental in the raising of funds and construction of the swimming pool complex at the golf club. At the grand opening of Ruzzo's Bowl-a-torium in the early 1950's he was scheduled to bowl and exhibition match with world-famed bowler Joe Falcaro of New York but a severe snow storm postponed the contest. He was named Kiwanis 'Man of the Year' in 1977. Mr. Jacobs previously volunteered for the March of Dimes and served in the Civil Air Patrol.
His beloved wife, Sylvia Wieselthier Jacobs died September 3, 2003. Three sisters, Esther Markowitz, Lillian Jacobowitz, Anna Ritter, two brothers, Rev. Irving Jacobowitz and Samuel Jacobowitz and one granddaughter, Jill Harris all died previously.
Survivng are one son, Dr. Henry Jacobs and his wife Sheila of Boynton Beach, FL, one daughter, Arlene Harris and her husband, Robert of Wappingers Falls, three grandchildren, Dr. Andrea Singer and her husband Eric; David Jacobs and his wife Carole and Michael Harris and his wife, Heather; six great-grandchildren, Marissa, Joshua and Jordan Singer, Alex, Drew and Paige Jacobs; nieces nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 1:00 pm at Congregation Ahavath Israel, 100 Lucas Ave., Kingston, NY 12401. Rabbi Tamar Crystal will officiate. Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery.
