Kenneth “Ken” Hotaling, December 18, 1935 – December 20, 2024

On December 20th, 2024, longtime Boulder, Colorado resident Ken Hotaling passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Remembered for his service in the United States Army, pioneering advancements in data storage for IBM, civic engagement in his community, and faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he will be missed.

Born December 18th, 1935 in Kingston, New York to father Kenneth Legrand Hotaling Sr and mother Mary (Straley) Hotaling, Ken’s remains will be laid to rest in the Hotaling family plot in Kingston, New York. He is survived by Mara Hotaling, his sister Kay Carol Hotaling of Albany, NY, his sons Kenny, Mark, and Jon, daughter Kristin, and his 8 grandchildren.

A descendent of General Freegift Patchin (1758-1831), Ken Hotaling carried forward his family’s legacy in support of the spirit of the American Revolution as mandated by the Constitutional consent of the governed.

During his 35-year career as an Engineer with IBM, Ken Hotaling was the inventor of several IBM patents that helped pioneer the development and advancement of analog and digital data storage infrastructure that the tech industry benefits from today.

A community-minded civic volunteer, Ken was also a longtime member of Kiwanis Club of Boulder with a focus on its Key Club service program to benefit youth leaders in the community. Ken’s life touched many people who are better off for knowing him.
