Joyce W. Sweeney

Joyce W. Sweeney, 90, formerly of Lake Katrine, passed away, May 14, 2013 at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck. She was born November 19, 1922 in Houston, TX to the late Benno A. and Sarah (Welsh) Walters.

She had been a member of the Fair St. Reformed Church where she served as Senior Elder for three years and was a Deacon. She was the primary organizer of the adult retreats to locations such as Ocean Grove, NJ, Frost Valley, NY, and Mohonk. A true leader, no task was ever too small for Joyce to accomplish with enthusiasm and grace. She later became a very active member of the Hurley Reformed Church, having served as a Deacon. An avid reader, Joyce served two terms on the Town of Ulster Library Board beginning in 1990. She spearheaded the Town of Ulster Library bus trips which are still a very popular feature of the library today. She is remembered as being helpful and friendly to all who needed her assistance. While in her fifties and sixties she delivered bagels for Mr. Bagel in Kingston to eateries ranging from the Catskills to New York City.

Joyce is survived by her former husband, Donald Sweeney of Woodstock, her daughter, Nancy J Sweeney of Lake Katrine, her brother, Benno W. Walters of Buena Vista, CO, grandchildren, Stephen Shane Benson and his wife Staci of Palm Harbor, FL, and Lucia Rodriquez-Sweeney of Boston, MA, her great grandchildren, Ella and Evan Benson of Palm Harbor, Fl.

She is predeceased by her children, Sarah Benson and Keith Sweeney.

Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, where friends may call on Monday from 4 to 6pm. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11am at Hurley Reformed Church. Burial will follow in Hurley Cemetery.
