Joyce Ellen Carey of Kingston, New York, died at her home on Sunday, November 20, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was sixty years old. Born in Kingston, New York on July 21, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Richard W. and Beverly (Lang) Dillon.
Joyce attended Vassar College and obtained undergraduate and master's degrees from SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Albany, respectively. Joyce enjoyed many pursuits over the course of her lifetime, but the best times were spent with her husband Bob and four children Meg, Kyle, Corryn, and Rachel. Joyce was a great athlete. She loved to run, bicycle, kayak, and her greatest passion: skiing! She spent many happy winters skiing with Bob and their children. Joyce enjoyed working at SUNY Ulster Library as well as with Bob's general contracting firm where they shared ideas of how buildings could be restored or renovated.
Joyce loved cooking fantastic meals, especially for her children and for her extended family during holidays. She cherished seeing her children and nieces and nephews mature and develop close bonds. Joyce also loved to garden and spent as much time as possible in her yard during the spring, summer and fall. Together with her friend and neighbor, Rose Bonczek, they resurrected and re-established a beautiful pocket park at the site of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Building, overlooking the Rondout Creek. Joyce marched to the beat of her own drum: she enjoyed the cold waters of Cape Cod, going to the National Zoo and shoveling snow. Joyce will be remembered for her mischievous sense of humor (she regularly astonished her adult children with remarks and anecdotes), selflessness, and independent spirit.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Carey and children Meghan Carey, Washington, DC; Kyle Carey, Washington, DC; Corryn Carey Darling, Jersey City, New Jersey; Rachel Carey, New York City; and son-in-law Eric Darling. A sister, Susan Wissman and her husband William of Arnold, Maryland, and many brothers and sisters- in-law, nieces and nephews also survive.
