Joseph T. O'Brien, 83 of Lake Katrine died peacefully on Sunday July 13, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Newport RI, he was the youngest son of the late Michael F. and Mary J. O'Brien. Joseph graduated from De La Salle Academy in Newport Rhode Island and the RCA Institute in New York City; he served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1958 Joe married the love of his life, the former Mary L. Feehly in Boston MA. She survives him at home. Joe and Mary recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. The newlyweds resided in Bedford MA before relocating to Lake Katrine when Joe transferred with IBM. He worked at IBM for over 35 years before retiring in 1991. Upon retiring Joe obtained his master electrician license and worked with his sons in construction. Joe loved puttering around his home and garden.
Joe was a communicant of St. Colman Church in East Kingston. Over the years he served his community as a board member at the Town of Ulster Library and as a Boy Scout Leader.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter Mary E. O'Brien (Babe), daughter Michelle O'Brien Zihal and husband Michael and their children Emily, Kevin and Matthew of Saratoga Springs, NY; a son Timothy J. O'Brien and his wife Maria Ricci and their children Leah and Teige of Kingston; a son Sean M O'Brien of Lake Katrine.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by a daughter Patricia M. O'Brien, a niece Maureen O'Brien and nephew Michael O'Brien; a sister Mary B. Schneider; and brothers Michael H. O'Brien, Col. James K. O'Brien and Thomas F. O'Brien.
The O'Brien Family thanks the hardworking medical professionals at both Kingston Hospital and Vassar Brothers Hospital for their excellent care and great kindness.
Joseph will be reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral, 411 Albany Ave on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 4-7 PM.
The funeral procession will form from the funeral home on Friday at 9:00 AM.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Colman's Church.
Interment will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Ulster County Community College Foundation: The Patricia M. O'Brien Scholarship.
