Joseph Garvila Sr.

Joseph L. Garvila Sr., 85, a 55 year resident of Hurley, NY, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was born on April 5, 1938, in Goshen, NY, son of the late Luke and Mary (Majewski) Garvila.  

Joe was married to the late Margaret Garvila, they wed on August 26, 1967. Margaret passed away on August 12, 2021.

Joe was a graduate of St. John's High School in Goshen and St. Bonaventure University with a major in History. While in college he studied and became a Secular Franciscan. For over 40 years Joe was employed with Shearson Lehmann/Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Kingston, where he was Senior Vice President and Branch Manager for over 20 years. After stepping down as branch manager he continued to actively work in the financial field as a stockbroker. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's RC Church and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Joe was a talented man with many skills, he enjoyed fly fishing and would often tie his own flies and make his own fly rods. He enjoyed building things and remodeled the kitchen addition to his home, mostly without help. He was a certified pilot and enjoyed flying as well as repairing watches. Joe was a very caring and kind person in a very quiet way, looking to help others in need, lending help whenever he could.

He is survived by his children, Joseph L. Garvila Jr., and Catherine Quinn, and her husband Dennis, his grandchildren, Justin Garvila, Kaelan Quinn, Mackenzie Quinn, Emma Garvila, and Madysen Quinn, his sister, Mary Sidoti, his niece, Maura Vo and her husband Son, as well as other dear family and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, Joe is predeceased by his brother, Luke Garvila, Jr., and his brother-in-law, Andrew Sidoti.

Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401, where family and friends may visit on Monday, November 20, 2023, from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral procession will form at 8:45am on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the funeral home and will proceed to St. Joseph’s RC Church, 242 Wall Street, Kingston, NY 12401 where at 10am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Inurnment will take place at 11am on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Hurley Cemetery, Hurley, NY.
