Lomontville – Rev. Joseph G. Bailey, retired minister of Clinton Avenue Methodist Church, of Lapla Road died Monday, September 12, 2005. He was 81.
Born in Bluefield, Virginia on March 22, 1924, he was a son of the late William Tracey and Mae Chandler Bailey.
He received a B.A. degree from Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA and a Masters of Divinity from Drew University in Madison, NJ. His first assignment in 1947 was the Damascus Circuit of Churches in Virginia. He became an ordained Elder in 1953.
Rev. Bailey served at Gardnertown and Fostertown United Methodist Church in Newburgh from 1953 – 1961; at Rehoboth United Methodist Church from 1961 – 1963 and then in Warwick from 1963 – 1970.
He was the Pastor of the Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Kingston from 1970 – 1976. Served at the First United Methodist Church in Brewster from 1976 - 1981; and then in Clinton, CT in 1981. Rev. Bailey retired in 1989.
An avid outdoorman, Rev. Bailey enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. He served as a volunteer firefighter and was active in youth camping programs with the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Fannie Baker Bailey; five sons Joseph G. Bailey Jr. of Columbia, SC; Alvin T. Bailey of Rocky Point; Steven T. and Timothy Bailey, both of Kingston, and Mark Bailey of Los Angeles, California; two sisters Elizabeth Pace of Falls Mills, VA and Opie Forbes of Bluefield, VA, three brothers Donnie Lee Bailey of Falls Mills, VA, Dallas Bailey and Ellis Bailey both of Ypsilanti, MI, seven grandchildren Jake, Jesse, Carly, Elizabeth, Jenna Lee, Allison and Stephanie Bailey and many nieces and nephews. Reposing at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. Kingston on Thursday from 1 – 3 pm. At 6:00 PM on Thursday evening funeral services will be conducted at Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Kingston.
Funeral Services and Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Bluefield, Virginia on Sunday.
