Joseph Colen of East Dr., Hurley died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at his home. He was 90.
He was born in Hoorn, Netherlands, a son of the late Karel and Hendrika Goudsmit Colen. He served in the Royal Netherlands Navy during WW II, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Joseph immigrated to the USA in 1949, married Margo Kulb and settled in Washington Heights. He moved to this area in 1957 and began a 30 year career at IBM, Kingston and belonged to the Quarter Century Club, A member of Congregation Ahavath Israel, he was former chairman of the Hebrew School, former Board member and Ritual Committee member. Joseph belonged to B'nai B'rith. Beloved husband of Margo Kulb Colen, loving father of Jay Charles Colen and his wife Francine of New City; Dr. Diane Josephine Wakely and her husband David of Madison, WI; brother of Helene DeLeeuw and her late husband Louis of The Hague, Netherlands; grandfather of Jeffrey Colen, Michael and Benjamin Wakely. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12:00 PM at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Jen Schlosberg will officiate. Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Ahavath Israel or the United Jewish Appeal.
