John W. Dixon of Harwich St. died Saturday, October 14, 2006 at home. He was 87.
He was born January 20, 1919 in the Bronx, a son of the late John E. and Josephine Buckley Conway Dixon.
An area resident since 1964, he retired as the supervisor of material control for the NYC Health and Hospitals Corp. after 33 years service. In addition, he drove for R.E. A. Express.
He was an avid Yankee fan and played on the Royal Jesters stickball team in the Bronx. He loved big band music and was an accomplished dancer. He hiked the Appalachain Trail. Some would say he was the corniest joke teller in New York. He was devoted to his family and loved to go to his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was the devoted husband to the love of his life and first communion partner for 63 years, the late Beatrice McCormack Dixon who died January 10, 2005.
Loving father of Ronald J. Dixon and his wife Aglae of Kingston; John V. Dixon and his wife, Sharon of Highland; Barbara A. Dixon-Greene of Kingston; Frances J. Hommel and her husband, Frederick of Sawkill; Patricia A. Dixon-Horvers and her husband, Kenneth of Kingston; James J. Dixon and his wife, Lisa of Kignston. Grandfather of Mark Dixon, Rhonda Dixon-Ziros, Natalie Polacco, Richard Reynolds, Randi Briggs, Eric Greene, Kelli Greene, Kaycie Hommel-Kimberlin, Frederick Hommel, Dunaven Hommel, Kristin Horvers, Tiffany Schovel, Shawn Dixon, James, John and Ryan Dixon. Fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A brother, James Conway and three sisters, Madeline Heron, Claire Dixon and Helen Dixon died previously.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm. A funeral procession will form on Thursday at 10:15 am from the funeral home. At 11:00 am a funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Lake Katrine. Fr. John Kearney will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
