John T. Murphy

July 6, 1934 — February 20, 2013

John T. Murphy Jr., 78, of Irving Place, Kingston died on February 20 at Golden Hill Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. He was born July 6, 1934 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan to the late John T. Murphy and Blanid L. (Sweeney) Murphy. He married Patricia (O'Reilly) Murphy on November 26, 1960 at St. Mary's Church in Kingston.




John received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1957 and a Master of Science Degree in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1963. He was employed for 35 years by IBM, retiring in 1992 as a Senior Financial Planner.




He was an avid skier who spent many winters skiing at Highmount and later Belleayre. In 1992, he and his wife co-founded High Land Flings Hiking Holidays, a hiking and walking tour company, and he became a licensed NYS DEC Hiking Guide.




John served on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston for 21 years and, for a number of years, as the Corporate Agent for IBM for the Notre Dame Annual Fund drive. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Kingston where he served as a Eucharistic minister for many years.




In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Maura Murphy of New York, NY, and Patrick J. Murphy and his wife Amy of Hyde Park, VT, two grandchildren, Gavin Murphy and Lily Murphy of Hyde Park, VT, his sister, Mary Jo Revitte of Westcliffe, CO, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his twin sister Blanid Ann Murphy.




Entrusted to the care of the A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, where friends will be received on Thursday, February 28, 4 to 7pm. The funeral procession will form on Friday, March 1 at 9:30am and proceed to St. Joseph's Church, 242 Wall Street, where at 10:30am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Cremation and interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston, will take place at a later date.




The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston, 139 Greenkill Ave., Kingston, N.Y. 12401
